Feedback please?
I am a spelling and grammer nut, I have spent years writing Procedure documents and Training manuals and now focus on website content in my current role.
One of my bug-bears is / are typing errors on websites and in books or documents. Obviously in a book or document you can’t always point out the problem to someone but with a website you can.
A couple of weeks ago I offered some feedback on a website (another Mum) where the site had typing errors and some spelling errors that I thought impacted on the site.
I thought I was polite and commented a number of times that I didn’t want to offend but I obviously did because the email I got back about my comments was very rude, offensive and a personal attack against me as a person. I must have really upset said Mum
What do you think? If you have a website, or print a brochure, or send out promotional material for your business would you like any errors pointed out? Is it polite to proof-read others information and offer feedback or should you just keep your comments to yourself?
As I said, this is something I do for a job so it’s hard to not notice these things and hard to not point them out, but I want some other opinions on this….please?

luv, luv, hate to be the one to bring it to your attention - have a look at your first line! How ironical..hee hee. I feel I can speak this way with you princess I’m sure you’ve told me in the past. Or maybe you just fixed all my boo-boos for me. Love your work! K
Spotted it as soon as I saw you had commented and have changed it already
Luv your work too!! J
I think the other person has an inferiority (sp) complex to get so uptight about constructive criticism (again SP - it’s late and I can’t be bothered to spell check!)
I would welcome someone advising me of blatant spelling or gramatical errors, as long as it were done in a nice way and not condescending way, which I’m sure you were not condescending!
I know of at least one web site, that is trying to sell products, that their site is full of spelling mistakes, and in my opinion blatant mistakes, I can’t even look at the site without getting annoyed. Hence, I don’t go there any more and have never, and never will buy something from them.
BTW - I love your blog!!!
Hi again. I have been meaning to get back and make a more constructive comment other than my flippant original. But now after moondust’s comment I’m paranoid about my site, maybe mine’s the one with all the errors - argh!!
In support of Princess JoJo who was (and still is really) the Project Manager on the development and construction of my site, I found her criticism positive, constructive and welcome! Afterall you seek an expert to do the things you are not so strong at. I would be upset if I didn’t get any feedback suggesting changes and corrections. Inputting info into a website can be a tedious task. It is usually done late into the night when the senses are less than prime (at least mine are - hence any typos on my site. Boy am I now paranoid about that).
Maybe the client was having a bad day, or week, or month, or year, oh Ok… Hope she’s not going to provide any service requiring contact with people who might give feedback. That would be interesting.
So in a nutshell I think Princess JoJo is great to work with and I have never taken any offence to her approach nor her words. There are loads more clients who appreciate what you do and how you do it. One bad apple…
You did the right thing, what else is she paying for!
xx
I have to say, I had someone give me a huge email with feedback on my website recently through another site and I loved it and found it really helpful as I agree its embarassing to have these errors and I think a mile a minute when I am composing in my head and often make mistakes as a result and try to check for them, but when I am tired, I miss heaps and I was so glad someone pointed them out rather than leave them and miss out on customers who are turned off by it.
Thank you ladies, I appreciate all your comments, and no, K, www.groovygromets.com.au looks great to me
I have to ask moondust, as I am a bit paraniod having recently found out how many errors I had on my website, were you talking about me, feel free to say so if you were as all feedback is good, even if negative as it helps to not make the mistakes again.
im a bit late but here is my two cents…
would you like someone to tell you if your fly was undone?
enough said…
So long as it’s done politely, yes, I would most definitely want someone to point them out sooner rather than later.
I do the same as you Princess Jo Jo… not with complete strangers but if it’s someone who’s a friend or associate in any way, I usually point out any errors I notice.
